Head of System Engineering
Apply Now- Employment Type: Permanent, full-time
- Location: Bristol, UK
- Date Added: October 2025
This is a high-impact leadership and technical role in an innovative UK tech company. You’ll define and drive system architecture across radio, baseband, MAC, and networking layers for advanced mobility and defence applications and you will be part of a collaborative, agile team that encourages creativity, curiosity and growth, both personally and professionally.
Who are we?
We are a fast-growing UK technology business specialising in advanced connectivity solutions, developing high-performance 60 GHz transport and mobility mesh systems that deliver secure, ultra-low-latency connectivity for demanding defence and high-speed transport applications.
We work together with integrators, manufacturers, and service providers to deliver the superior connectivity needed for the data-intensive applications of the future. That is why we are trusted partners of the world’s biggest names in telecoms and technology.
We are seeking a Head of System Engineering to lead the definition and system architecture of our products, transforming marketing and mission requirements into precise product specifications that our engineering teams can deliver against.
About the Role
Engaging and working closely with our multi-disciplinary engineering team, and reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, this is a highly visible leadership role, whilst offering hands-on technical contributions. In addition, this role supports the Commercial team by providing deep technical insight to help position the company as a trusted technical partner.
The System Engineering team leads the definition and architecture of our next-generation mmWave (60 GHz) wireless networking products for high-speed transport and defence mobility applications. They translate complex market, customer, and technical requirements into clear, actionable specifications, ensuring systems meet end-end performance, interoperability, and compliance expectations across radio, baseband, MAC, networking, and hardware domains.
The group collaborates closely with hardware, software, and test teams to ensure system intent is realised, validated, and performs to specification; they oversee performance verification, testing strategies, and field trials to confirm real-world operation under mobility and mesh networking conditions. In doing so, they provide the collateral to make critical design trade-offs to optimise performance, reliability, and scalability in challenging high-frequency environments.
- Define and own the system architecture for 60 GHz wireless mobility mesh products, covering radio, baseband, MAC, and networking layers.
- Lead system definition from concept to delivery, turning marketing inputs, customer requirements, and standards into detailed system and product specifications.
- Understanding the overall system solutions that our customers want our products to function within.
- Define and simulate system behaviour, including link budgets, mobility and network routing performance, to specify features, and guide algorithm and hardware design.
- Support our Commercial team via technical contributions to proposals and in the preparation of White Papers demonstrating the applicability of our system solutions.
- Collaborate with hardware, firmware, software, and test teams to ensure system intent is implemented, verified, and meets performance expectations.
- Collaborate with Product Management and Customer Engineering teams to ensure deployed system performance meets mission requirements.
- Provide technical leadership and mentoring within a growing team of system engineers and architects.
About You
You’ll bring a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a relevant technical field (a PhD is a plus) and over 10 years of hands-on experience in wireless system design, architecture, or systems engineering.
You have a proven track record of taking innovative wireless networking products from concept through to successful market delivery, and thrive in leading cross-functional teams within structured development environments.
Your deep understanding of wireless communication technologies (such as Wi-Fi, 4G/5G, and private networks) enables you to optimize radio system behaviour, RF performance, and network protocols with precision.
Experience in system modelling, link budgets, interference analysis, and performance prediction tools is essential, along with familiarity in embedded system architectures, hardware/software co-design, and system validation methodologies.
Knowledge and experience of customer domains like Networking for Rail or Defence Tactical Communication will set you apart. Most importantly, you excel at translating customer and market needs into clear, actionable engineering specifications that drive real-world impact.
Your technical expertise is matched by your ability to engage and inspire others. You possess the gravitas and confidence to present to and influence both internal and external stakeholders, and your excellent leadership, communication, and documentation skills enable you to articulate complex system behaviours with clarity and impact. A strategic thinker with strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, you consistently uphold high quality standards, both in your own work and in guiding others to achieve excellence.
